Taxi fund drive near its goal

A taxi service in Garrison could soon become a reality.
The service, proposed this summer by the Garrison Chamber of Commerce’s Community Development Committee, has garnered both interest and support. So much, in fact, that nearly 90 percent of the target fundraising goal has already been committed to the project.
During Monday’s chamber meeting, Mike Matteson, committee member, said the taxi could be “up and running” by the first part of September.
He said the project received a financial boost from a recently disbanded group, the Garrison Area Jaycees. In addition, Matteson said, “There has been good participation from individuals.” Other donations have come via local businesses and organizations.
As of Monday, Matteson said, $8,975 had been raised or pledged in support of the service. The committee’s goal is to raise $10,000.
Plans are to purchase a used mini-van from Rensch Farm Store to serve as a taxi. The vehicle will be owned by the Garrison Area Improvement Association (GAIA) and operated by West River Transportation.
