Groundwork will begin as soon as weather permits on two tennis courts in Garrison. The courts will be in northwest Garrison and adjacent to the swimming pool.
Officials met this past week to coordinate efforts to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner. Contractors were also announced.
Garrison Mayor Shannon Jeffers, who assumed the role of general contractor for the project earlier this year, said the surface will be asphalt. Bechtold Paving, Minot, will be the firm charged with paving the tennis courts. The cost is estimated to be about $33,000, he said. Jeffers said at a meeting in March that the cost could be reduced because of the city’s work with the business regarding street repairs and maintenance.
Dakota Fence, also of Minot, will install fence at a cost of about $18,000. Jeff Coggins, Minot, will handle the striping, sealing and finishing of the courts. A cost was not given.
Jeffers added that Nygard Construction, Garrison, has been asked to do the dirt work. Jeffers said he would undertake the task of installing the retaining wall. Total cost estimate, Jeffers said, will be about $105,000. So far, a little more than $87,000 has been raised.
Committee members realize that another $20,000 must be raised. Backers say they feel that won’t be a problem. While contributions to Better Living for Garrison (BLFG) have slowed, supporters said all avenues will be taken to secure the final amount.
At Monday’s Garrison Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee meeting, officials feel there is some confusion over the actual cost of the two courts.
