Blind intersections continue to be a concern for city officials in Garrison.
At their meeting Monday, council members heard from Maintenance Supervisor Alan Beyreis that a number of intersections in the community are dangerous for motorists, and are ripe for an accident to happen.
Two primary areas have been targeted. One area is the intersection of Sixth Avenue NE and First Street NE. The other is the intersection of First Street NW and Third Avenue NW.
“The main problem, generally, is pine trees,” Beyreis said.
That’s the case with the two locations in question. City officials note that other intersections pose a threat when it comes to visibility as well. Residents who reside on corners are asked to consider if their lots create a traffic hazard at the intersection.
Protocol is that once an intersection or area has been identified, a letter is sent to the property owner. It is then the property owner’s responsibility to trim the trees causing the problem. If the obstruction is not taken care of in a timely manner, city officials hire a trimmer to take care of the matter and the expense is placed on the property owner’s tax bill. But followup has been, for the most part, nonexistent.
