Visitors to Garrison, or residents who want to find names of family members or loved ones on the Veterans Memorial Wall at the Garrison City Auditorium have to hunt and peck.
Sometimes it feels like hours, scanning each row, line by line, until that person’s name is discovered. That’s about to change. A chronicled list of names on the Veterans Memorial Wall is being updated.
Soon, numbers will be affixed to each row of names, both vertically and horizontally. Numbers will correspond to a name in the book. A person will be able to look in the book, see the numbers, and then follow the pattern to find a particular name.
There are more than 800 names of those who served in the armed forces from the Garrison area imprinted on 2x4-inch gold-colored plaques. There are 18 rows, each with 48 names – intimidating to a casual passerby who might want to find the name of a specific person.
The memorial wall was established by the Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post 49 in 2004. It was dedicated during Memorial Day services that year. The wall lists local veterans, both living and deceased, and veterans with local ties. Since its dedication, updating and fine-tuning has been an ongoing process.
