Watch Out, Walleye!

Governor’s Walleye Cup to bring 260 teams to Lake Sakakawea

The waters of Lake Sakakawea will be rather busy in a few weeks as 260 teams of two will converge for the North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup.
The two-day tournament, held July 16 and 17, will bring teams – some local and from within the state and others from 10 states – to Garrison with the hopes they will catch a whopper of a walleye.
The walleye had a reprieve last year as COVID-19 canceled the celebrated fishing derby, but this year, the majority of teams who signed up for the 2020 tournament will be back, said Joyce Pfliger, a longtime chairperson for the tournament.
Even with the tournament weeks away, Pfliger’s telephone is still busy with interested parties wanting in on the tournament. She told them to send in their information, but warned them there is a waiting list, so there is no guarantee they could get in this year. “Altogether, if I had kept track of all these people getting in after, the waiting list would have been longer.”
The tournament begins July 15 with registration at the Garrison City Auditorium at 12 p.m. A catered meal is also available to those who want to eat. Then, a rules meeting is held that evening at 7 p.m.
