Water lines in deep freeze

By STU MERRY

There’s no questioning this winter has been one of the coldest on record. The frost line this year is deep – deep enough to cause three water service lines in the city to freeze.

At their meeting March 3, Garrison City Council members heard that one, at the Garrison Bible Church, has not been restored.

Public Works Supervisor Alan Beyreis said the city has had three water service lines freeze under the streets this year. The areas include Third Street NE and Second Street SE. Those have been restored, leaving the one at the Bible Church inoperable.

This is not the first time the city has had freeze-up problems with water lines. But those have been far and few between. "This is the second time in the past 10 years that we have had frozen service lines under the street," Beyreis said, following the meeting.

Water mains are usually a standard bury depth of eight feet where the water service lines are connected. Beyreis said there are cases where bury depths have been reduced due to street construction and landscaping. "Most of our water mains range around that eight feet bury depth, but we do have some at that six feet bury depth," he said.
