When Ivy Bicknese learned that she was assigned to work in North Dakota, she cried.
Originally from Manila, Philippines, Bicknese was a student in Massachusetts when she learned that through her contract as a nurse, she was destined for the Peace Garden State. During a telephone conversation, her mother told her that if she wasn’t happy, she could come home.
However, Bicknese followed through with her contract. And she’s glad she did.
“I like the small town,” Bicknese said, noting that it makes her feel at home.
Last Friday, Bicknese organized a cultural event at Benedictine Living Center Garrison, where she works as an RN. Through the event, she and other staff members from the Philippines presented on the customs, activities, culture and food from their native country.
In addition to Bicknese, they are Mark Gabaon, Lailanie Concepcion and Imelda Frias, all RNs, and Frias’ husband, Johmar Saura, who works in culinary services. All five spoke to the neighbors – the name given to residents at the facility – about different aspects regarding the Philippines
During her presentation, Concepcion noted that roughly 25 percent of all overseas nurses are from the Philippines. Frias noted that there is more opportunity in the United States for nursing jobs.
In fact, negotiations are underway for three Filipino RNs to join the staff at BLCG. One of the three will be arriving in the middle of April; the others are coming at an indeterminate time as they make arrangements or pass the visa interview.
