White Shield powwow time
By STU MERRY
Drums pounding in the distance, dazzling multi-colored feathers blowing in the Sakakawea breeze and dancers pounding the earth in a thunderous dance.
The White Shield Annual Powwow, this weekend, is celebrated by Native Americans from across the United States and Canada every summer.
The Arikara Celebration Grounds are located along N.D. Highway 37, one-mile south of White Shield, home of the Arikara nation. This year, dancers will perform in a new arena.
