Zoning, annexation next steps

Zoning, annexation next steps

It’s full steam ahead for Dollar General’s plans to come to Garrison.
The Planning and Zoning Committee reviewed the store’s plans Monday evening and encouraged the engineering firm to submit an application for rezoning and annexation into the city.
Ten business owners and managers and the two landowners attended the meeting. Although there were questions, no opposition was brought up to the store’s plans to build east of McLean Electric Cooperative on Hwy. 37.
The next step will be to rezone the land from agriculture to commercial. The land is owned by George Schlichting.
Annexation was encouraged by the audience because of fire protection and because the city would benefit from sales tax revenue.
Alan Betchan, president of AAB Engineering of Sand Springs, Okla., said, “We actually encourage the city to annex because it’s sales tax revenue you want to capture.”
Bruce Schreiner, Garrison fire chief, encouraged the planning and zoning committee, to annex the land within the city limits and connect to the city water supply.
